Supervised visitation is a court-ordered or voluntarily arranged service in which a neutral third-party monitor observes contact between a child and a parent — or other family member — to help ensure the child's safety and wellbeing throughout the visit.
At Practical Life Visitations, all sessions are conducted virtually via Zoom, which makes scheduling more accessible and removes the burden of travel while maintaining the same rigorous standard of care as in-person monitoring.
Online Eligibility Check
The process starts with a short, self-serve eligibility check on our website — no phone call or scheduled meeting required. In just a few minutes, we confirm we're a good fit for your situation by asking about:
- Whether your case is a California court case, or a private agreement governed by California law
- Whether you currently have a court order for this visitation, or are arranging this voluntarily
- What language supervision needs to be conducted in
- Whether both the visiting parent and the child's household have reliable access to a device with a camera and internet connection
You'll get an instant answer. If we're a fit, you move straight into the next step — no waiting on a callback.
Guidelines, Payment & Case Intake
Once you're confirmed eligible, three quick steps complete your case setup, all online:
- Review our full guidelines and policies, then confirm your agreement with a typed signature
- Pay the $75 intake fee securely by card — or, if a county or agency is covering the cost, submit their contact information instead and we'll coordinate payment directly with them
- Complete your case intake — court and case details (if applicable), the other party's contact information so they can complete their own intake, information about the children involved, and your availability
Once both parties have completed their intake and your case has been reviewed, we move forward with scheduling your first visit.
The Virtual Visit
Sessions are conducted via a secure Zoom link shared privately with all authorized participants. The monitor joins the call before the visit begins, confirms that everyone present is authorized, and remains on the call for its entire duration.
During the visit, the monitor observes quietly and objectively. They are present to:
- Ensure the interaction stays within the boundaries set by the court order or case agreement
- Gently redirect conversation or behavior if a guideline is not being followed
- Intervene and end the session if the safety or wellbeing of the child is at risk
- Note the content and tone of the interaction for documentation purposes
Documentation
Following every session, the monitor prepares a detailed, objective written report. This report is a factual account of what occurred during the visit — written without bias and in professional, strengths-based language.
Reports typically include:
- Date, time, duration, and participants present
- A factual summary of the interaction and topics discussed
- Any redirections issued and the response to them
- The child's general demeanor and level of engagement throughout
- Any incidents or concerns, if applicable
Reports are made available to the court and authorized parties as required by your case order, and are handled with strict confidentiality in all other respects.
Ongoing Sessions
Once intake is complete and guidelines are in place, sessions proceed on the agreed schedule — whether weekly, bi-weekly, or as directed by the court. Consistency matters, and we work to create a predictable routine that children and families can depend on.
As circumstances evolve — through changes to court orders, scheduling adjustments, or transitions toward less-restrictive arrangements — we adapt alongside your case. Our goal is always to support the family's progress in the most constructive way possible.
Why Virtual Supervised Visitation?
Virtual visitation — conducted via secure video platform — has been recognized by California courts as a legitimate and effective form of supervised contact under Family Code section 3100. It offers real, practical advantages:
- No travel required for any party, reducing logistical stress and scheduling barriers
- Accessible from any location, making it ideal for families living in different cities, counties, or states
- The same objective, detailed monitoring and documentation as in-person visits
- A private, controlled environment that minimizes the risk of incidental contact between parties
- Fully compliant with California Standard 5.20, which governs both in-person and virtual supervised visitation
